Smart consumerism goes hand in hand with ample research and background study of products that we consume. The following is something I picked up from my supplements.
Brands' Iron + Vitamin B Complex (which contains)
Iron -
Iron is needed for the production of hemoglobin and myoglobin (the form of hemoglobin found in muscle tissue) which requires this nutrient.
It is also needed for the oxygenation of red blood cells, a healthy immune system and for energy production.
Vitamin B2 - Riboflavin
Riboflavin is further needed to activate vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), helps to create niacin and assists the adrenal gland. It may be used for red blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration, and growth.
It eases watery eye fatigue and may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of cataracts. Vitamin B2 is required for the health of the mucus membranes in the digestive tract and helps with the absorption of iron and vitamin B6.
Although it is needed for periods of rapid growth, it is also needed when protein intake is high, and is most beneficial to the skin, hair and nails (definite bonus).
Vitamin B6 - PyridoxinePyridoxine is required for the balancing of hormonal changes in women as well as assisting the immune system and the growth of new cells. It is also used in the processing and metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, while assisting with controlling your mood as well as your behavior. Pyridoxine might also be of benefit for children with learning difficulties, as well as assisting in the prevention of dandruff, eczema and psoriasis.
Women in particular may suffer from pre-menstrual fluid retention, severe period pains, emotional PMS symptoms, premenstrual acne and nausea in early pregnancy. Mood swings, depression as well as loss of sexual drive is sometimes noted when pyridoxine is in short supply and the person is on hormone replacement therapy or on birth control pills.B12 - Cyanocobamin
Cyanocobamin is needed in the manufacture of red blood cells and the maintenance of red blood cells and it stimulates appetite (not really good for me), promotes growth ( I want to grow taller) and release energy. It is often used with older people to give an energy boost, assist in preventing mental deterioration and helps with speeding up thought processes. Some people are also of the opinion that it helps with clearing up infections and provide protection against allergies and cancer. This vitamin is also used in the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
Flavettes Vitamin C
Vitamin C is required in the synthesis of collagen in connective tissue, neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, carnitine, conversion of cholesterol to bile acids and enhances iron bioavailability. Ascorbic acid is a great antioxidant and helps protect the body against pollutants.
Because vitamin C is a biological reducing agent, it is also linked to prevention of degenerative diseases - such as cataracts, certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases.
Ascorbic acid also promotes healthy cell development, proper calcium absorption, normal tissue growth and repair - such as healing of wounds and burns. It assists in the prevention of blood clotting and bruising, and strengthening the walls of the capillaries.
Vitamin C is needed for healthy gums, to help protect against infection, and assisting with clearing up infections and is thought to enhance the immune system and help reduce cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and preventing arteriosclerosis.
Phew! What a long read. Keeps me on my toes and lets me know what it is I am feeding my system. I think it is good practise to read up on all our supplements.Data on vitamins & minerals, taken from www.anyvitamins.com

byk sgt dengar info pasal supplemet ni la dik. ada org cakap bagus. ada org ckp kalo kita terlalu bergantung, sampai sudah kita akan bergantung. but to me, as long kita sihat, y dun we invest a lil bit kan. cumanyer akak ni kan, sgt la tidak berdisiplin makan itu supplement!
i fail terribly in taking my supplements.
Lots of bottles, none touched.
Time to start living healthy!
kak anna: hehe..kte sgt2 la berdisiplin bab mkn2 ubat or jgn garu2 tempat nyamuk gigit etc etc..lgpon teringt2 brape ratus sen abes kat sebotol itu. aah, ade gak dgr mcm tu mb ade tru+false nye, thats why i would change supplements on intervals.sometime amek b, the rest of the yr lyn multi ke..mcm tu la kot.pening system bdn =p
naya: yes, start now! tp cek ur suplements for exp dates ye =p
i'm a believer in supplements... i only take nutrilite... mmg hari2 ambik, x boleh miss... bkn kata im depending on it, but hari2 apa la sgt yg kita makan... most foods we eat mana la berkhasiat sgt coz of the way we cook it kan... so taking supplements is like an insurance for our health...
wuhu, very informative kin..nice post.. i think supplements are good, especially if we are people who choose their food. It would help if we find out what the natural diet equivalent for supplements would be. maybe we could even save on those bottled vitamins. just a thought. =)
just sharing...
1 nutrilite's bio-c plus (vitamin c with bioflavanoid, vitamin c without bioflavanoid is nuthing)is equivalent to 4 oranges, and we need at least 3 tablets of bio c= 12 oranges.... ha, hari2 ada kita makan 12 oranges? tu baru bio c, wat abt other vitamins & minerals :) suka tak suka mmg kena take supplements juga.... kalau nak citer abt all these mmg la panjang... in a way im lucky to know all these thru many2 health talks i attended by very well known physio-neurologist, who's into alternative medicine...
mcm website dr lak :P -padie
elmo: si azrin busuk ade hati bahasakan diri elmo. yup, i am a picky eater.u are either a veggie type or u hate veggies.tang tu vitamins kurang but then lifestyle can also affect our vitamin generation.just eat right and love ur body!!
kak naddy: sonok gak mcm bukak forum plak kat sni.its a whole loadsome klo nak consume ikot the 'proper' daily intake.kang too much fruit will make u bloat n then buncit la etc2..moderacy is always the way to go kan =)
omg kin.. i didnt know you're so good in these health-related things... bagus.. bagus.. pasni ape2 hal saya refer kat awak je k.
i am not that good la el..just suke read up on health issues once in a while. why stomach crunches alone wont work etc etc..not yet a health freak tho haha
padi- ye, mb deep down is the doctor in me, not!
yups, buah&sayur pun dorang byk pakai pesticides, herbicides semua... so still elok ambik supplements juga... dah tu meat pun toxic kan (ada kuar dlm the star), so lagi la perlu take supplements...
kak naddy: tu la, mcm2 kan skrang?mmg cancer tu mcm inevitable if ive got the right word there.we are slowly mutating our own systems.toxins, chemicals, preservatives..huaa..scary 2!
even supplements pun kalau ambik synthetic punya baik lah jgn ambik, coz nanti lagi bahaya... vitamins2 ni pun semua dari satu kilang and cop brand lain2 je... sama gak mcm makeup semua tu... so ambik yg organic & natural... tht'
s why i love nutrilite... no other supplements like it....
wow, ive got such a knowledgeable crowd! nutrilite eh? n is kak naddy? in the end its also about tailoring to your body's needs, which means that kne la slalu buat blood tests or check-ups to see how we fair on taking care of our systems =)
yess it's me... ehehehhe kkdg malas nak sign in :P
